Home office planning tips 2

Here are some more ideas to help make your office both functional and attractive.

Before you close in any walls, make sure you’ve planned your wiring requirements. This can include electricity (a separate circuit for computer hardware, answer machine etc. you can protect from power surges), phone lines (for fax, phone, and modem), cable (which you may be using to access the Internet) and even audio (if you like a little music with your work.)

With technology moving the way it is, it’s a good idea to allow for upgrades. One good way of doing this is to route a plastic pipe from the electrical panel to your office, terminating in a discreet place you can cover with a panel cover of some sort. This way, if you need to upgrade wiring, you don’t need to try and run it through framing… just slide an electrician’s fishtape down the conduit and pull the wire through.

Hardwood or tile flooring is easy to clean, and doesn’t collect dust or computer-unfriendly static the way carpets do. If you opt for wood, protect the area under your desk chair with a plastic desk mat.

Consider proper heating and air conditioning. You want to be comfortable while you’re working.

Plan your colors carefully. That bold red might look attractive, but according to psychologists, can make you aggressive. On the other hand, maybe that’s a good thing. Cool colors such as green and blue are more relaxing, but may be too relaxing. A neutral white or yellow may be best, depending on your personality.
