Save energy with an upstairs laundry room – 3

It’s only a laundry room, but it’s still a room in your house, and since it’s on the busy upper floor, it’s going to get visited more often. So have fun decorating it. You may want to extend your home’s décor into the laundry room, or maybe let your inner designer go wild, trying out those more adventurous colors, painting and texturing techniques you were too timid to use in other rooms. It’s a great place to practice and make your mistakes before applying them elsewhere. This is a room where you can indulge in bold colors, particularly since they can tone down the clutter lighter walls accentuate.

Add accessories that will help. Build a hideaway ironing board behind a cupboard door. Make a movable folding table by taking a pre-fab bathroom cabinet and adding sturdy rubber wheels to the base. Make sure two of the wheels have brakes, so it will stay in place when you’re using it.

Since the floor is likely to get wet now and then, use sturdy vinyl tiles or ceramic tiles. And consider ceramic tiles for the wall and around the sink, too.

Consider nicely crafted cabinets and standalone furniture — real wooden pieces you’d usually consider for the rest of the house.

Use real woven baskets rather than the plastic standbys.

Hang pictures or posters. Just because it’s a functional work room doesn’t mean you can’t make it enjoyable to spend time in.
